SAMPLE READING: The Reason for the Season

reasonforseasonWhat is the higher purpose of the holiday season?

The right focus: King of Hearts
To embrace: 7 of Hearts
To release: King of Spades
Best course of action: Jack of Hearts
Overall Guidance: 10 of Spades

The numerical theme is 9, which seems natural since the holiday season falls in December, when we are winding down our year. The 9 numerical theme often appears when at a crossroads or when trying to begin something new but perhaps having unfinished business. It always signals an ending and a time of completion.

There are only Hearts (people/emotions) and Spades (problems/blocks) in this reading. This combination often relates to separation and divorce, emotional loss and disappointment, unhappiness and shattered dreams. Not very cheery! Unfortunately, the holidays are often a miserable time of year for a lot of people and the suit combination seems to reflect this. However, let’s look at the individual cards.

The right focus: King of Hearts
The King of Hearts represents a doctor, minister, therapist…someone who is kind and sensitive but keeps his own wounds hidden while helping others. So during the holidays our focus should be on helping others instead of being self-involved. It suddenly strikes me as I write this that the card means our focus is on being a King of Hearts – an authority on matters of the heart. The King of Hearts might also be an apt symbol for God or Christ.

To embrace: 7 of Hearts
Embrace the power of hope, faith, and prayer. Typically, this card relates to imagination, fantasy and possibly unrealistic expectations. Since this is what we should embrace, however, it suggests that there’s nothing wrong with visions of sugar plums dancing in your head!

To release: King of Spades
We need to release the urge to make important decisions during this time. Perhaps since we are at the end of a cycle, this time is best for wrapping up loose ends and unfinished business, not starting new projects or making new decisions – save that for January 1! The King of Spades also represents a very serious person who can provide wise advice but rarely shows any emotions. This person is difficult to love or get along with. So, we should also dispose of our dispassion and seriousness.

Best course of action: Jack of Hearts
The movie, Elf, came to mind when I saw this card here. Like Buddy, the Jack of Hearts loves freely and completely. He is pure emotion and enthusiasm wrapped up in wide-eyed wonder. There’s no logic or reason to confine his self-expression. Our best course of action is to abandon the cynicism of the last 11 months and view the holidays with the innocence of a child (or an elf!).

Overall guidance: 10 Spades
It was surprising to see this as a guidance card because in general readings it means a forced loss. However, the bright side of this card is acceptance and transformation. Spades always show a need for change and elimination. Our overall guidance is simple: release anything you no longer need or want; let go of unwelcome situations, bad habits and stagnant ideas. This season allows us to purge our lives to make room for things that truly nurture our spirit.

Buddy-isms to get you through the holidays:

First we’ll make snow angels for two hours, then we’ll go ice skating, then we’ll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse Cookie dough as fast as we can, and then we’ll snuggle.
We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.
